SAP BASIS is a collection of middleware programs which form the base (hence the name BASIS) of the SAP R/3 platform which is used for managing large corporations. It is the foundation component of the SAP systems and consists of a large number of components. The client/server architecture serves to pass information between the client and the server, the RDBMS serves the database functions, and the GUI is used for effective interface capabilities for the SAP administrators, the development environment for system development, the data dictionary for development process and the system administration and monitoring tools for conducting system administration. Through these components’ functionalities and their collaboration, the entire R/3 structure of SAP works. Several challenges are involved in effective SAP BASIS administration such as, reporting log on information, gathering SQL server information, getting system profile parameters and general troubleshooting practices. In a nutshell SAP BASIS administration is the internal stronghold and support given to the various SAP modules for their proper functioning and smooth working.
